The IEA widens its 2026 shortfall, and points at one waterway

A shut strait has now bent a full year of global oil accounts out of shape. The agency’s August ledger shows how far.

The International Energy Agency’s August Oil Market Report widened its estimate of this year’s global supply deficit to 1.27 million barrels a day, up from 860,000 in the July edition. Global supply in July ran 6.3 million barrels a day below the same month last year, with 8.3 million barrels a day of Gulf production still offline. Observed world inventories fell 69 million barrels during July to below 7.9 billion — the lowest since April 2025 — bringing the drawdown since late February to 410 million barrels.

The agency attributes the squeeze to the Strait of Hormuz shutdown, the American blockade of Iranian exports, attacks in the Bab el-Mandeb, and reduced Kazakh CPC Blend flows. Middle East loadings fell from about 20 million barrels a day in early July to roughly 12 million by month’s end. What makes this year unusual is that demand has fallen too — the IEA now sees consumption contracting by 1.6 million barrels a day in 2026 — and the deficit has widened anyway. That is the signature of a supply problem rather than a demand boom, which is also why prices have stayed high without racing away: North Sea Dated closed July at $96.80 a barrel, and Brent was near $88.50 on Friday.

The agency’s 2027 outlook assumes de-escalation in the coming months. That assumption, not the arithmetic, is the fragile part. The waterway remains the sentence’s subject.
